#OnThisDay in 1794, President George Washington signed “An act to provide a Naval Armament.” It called for six frigates, four of forty-four guns and two of thirty-six guns, to be built or purchased for the new United States Navy. #BuiltInBoston, USS Constitution remains today, still serving as the oldest active-duty warship afloat in the world and America's Ship of State. Huzzah! 🇺🇸 ⚓

You really need to see our rough-legged hawks in context to appreciate the magnitude of their size! These beauties were perched outside our office window in the Navy Yard today. What should we name them?

These are two beautiful red-tailed hawks (not rough-legged). Lucky you get to see them this close!

If you see a hawk in Boston or driving down the road somewhere in MA,odds are it’s going to be a red-tailed hawk. We have other species of hawks, but red tails are chunky guys and easy to see, and happy to hunt in the highway grassy medians, suburban areas, etc. This single strip of flecking across the chest/belly (the belly band) is a good identifier around here. There’s a LOT of variation of red tailed hawks geographically, but our guys looks like this. The light eyes also tell us that at least the one on the right is a juvenile (i cant see the other well enough), and they will darken with time. They also won’t grow their red tail feathers until their second year. They’re in the same genus as rough legged, though! It looks like the last time someone saw a rough legged hawk near you was a single one over Logan back in December, and before that at the beginning of 2023.

Hull (for Isaac Hull) and Jones (for John Pail Jones)

Karen J. Cook 😊

Stunning Red-tailed Hawk. Holds her own against any 🦅. 😏

I remember the Commodore feasting outside my office window. Is that the same perch? 🦅🐀 ⚓🪕

In 1925, schoolchildren at more than 800 schools across the U.S. wrote essays and collected pennies as part of a contest and fundraising campaign sponsored by the Elks Club to help pay for the restoration of USS Constitution. 13-year-old Julia Kochevar of Grand Junction, CO, was the national winner awarded this medal, writing about the role of Constitution as a source of American patriotism that had to be preserved. 🇺🇸

“To her mast we shall tack the patriotism of our young Americans, around her let us gather the aspirations and ambitions of our youth,” she wrote. “With her as a guide they will sail triumphantly on, fearlessly buffeting the billows that arise up to engulf them.”

We hope you enjoy Julia's story and winning essay as much as we do (3 min read): bit.ly/3PuOuw4
